Recently, inorganic ion-releasing hydrogels have drawn increasing attention to facilitate tissue regeneration. Among the various inorganic ions, zinc ions (Zn2+) exhibit excellent wound repair and tissue regeneration ability. In this study, we developed zinc peroxide (ZnO2)-mediated gelatin hydrogels that release Zn2+ for facilitating wound healing. The hydrogels released Zn2+ in a sustained manner for up to 14 days. The bioactive hydrogels showed excellent cell viability and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the Zn2+-releasing hydrogels promoted cell proliferation, vascular recruitment, hair follicle development, and collagen synthesis during wound healing process. In sum, we suggest that our functional hydrogels hold great potential as ideal wound healing materials for advanced wound management and tissue regeneration. |
