Single-walled carbon nanotube(SWNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT) were functionalized with 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid via “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction in PPA/P2O5 to afford diamino-functionalized SWCNT(DIF-SWNT) and MWNT(DIF-MWNT) to improve the solubility, dispersibility, and interfacial adhesion of CNT in polymer matrix. Although electrophilic substitution reaction is not suitable for electron poor materials such as carbon nanomaterials, the reaction condition developed and applied to CNT such as SWNT and MWNT works well for the functionalization. The resultant functionalized DIF-SWNT and DIF-MWNT were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA, XRD, SEM and FE-TEM. Subsequently, the grafting of ABPBI onto the surface of DIF-SWNT (10 wt%) or DIF-MWNT (10 wt%) was conducted by simple in-situ polymerization of AB monomer, 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid dihydrochloride. The resultant ABPBI/SWNT and ABPBI/MWNT showed improved the mechanical and electrical properties. |
