Effect of Pressure on the Dispersion of Gold nanoparticles in Polystyrene-block-Poly (n-pentyl methacrylate) Copolymer thin Film |

Incorporation of nanoparticles into a block copolymer has been extensively investigated to be utilized for photonic band gap materials, plasmonic waveguide materials, and high density storage media. We prepared symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(n-pentyl methacrylate) copolymer (PS-b-PnPMA)/Au nanoparticle composites. We confirmed via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy that Au nanoparticles were selectively incorporated in only PS lamellar microdomains. This is because the surface of Au nanoparticles was modified by thiol-terminated PS. We also investigated whether the dispersion of Au nanoparticles changes once the block copolymer becomes disordered state. The ordered-to-disordered transition (ODT) could be achieved by pressure at lower temperatures for PS-b-PnPMA film, which is distinctly different from conventional block copolymer films where the ODT is only possible at high temperatures. We found that pressure affects significantly the dispersion of Au nanoparticles. |
