Highly Pure 8-Shaped and Cage-Shaped Cyclic Polystyrenes |

Topological control of polymers has provided opportunities in polymer science since it gives unprecedented properties from nontraditional molecular architectures. Nonlinear polystyrenes such as star-, figure-8- and cage-shaped architectures were synthesized by combining atom transfer radical polymerization and click chemistry. Highly purified polymers with the designed chain topologies (figure-8, cage) were obtained by using a preparative size exclusion chromatography, which was confirmed by SEC, MALDI-TOF MS, 1H NMR, FT-IR spectrometry. Their purities were determined by using a two dimensional liquid chromatography. It was found that the glass transition temperatures were in order of cage-, figure-8-, and star-shaped polymers possibly due to the multiple links that constrain the overall molecular diffusivity in the case of multi-cyclic polymers (cage, figure-8). Monte Carlo simulation on the glass transition behavior of model system also agreed well with the experimental results. |
