제목 Characterization of polystyrenes synthesized by reversible addition and fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization
초록 RAFT polymerization is one of the reversible deactivation radical polymerization. The equilibria between active and dormant species is established by a degenerative chain transfer mechanism by a RAFT agent. Since the RAFT agent does not generate the radicals, an external source of radicals, such as thermal initiator is required. In a RAFT process, segments from the initiators or the RAFT agents initiate polymerization and become the alpha-chain end of polymers while the transferring moiety from RAFT agents become the omega chain-ends of the polymers. In addition, the termination reaction produces dead chain. However, RAFT-produced polystyrenes with different chain-ends have not been thoroughly characterized yet. In this study, we synthesized a polystyrene with hydroxyl alpha and/or hydroxyl omega chain-end by RAFT polymerization. The hydroxyl chain-ends in the polystyrenes allow for separation of living and dead chains using HPLC and detailed characterization using NMR and MALDI-MS.
