Preparation of pore-filled cation exchange membranes for membrane capacitive deionization |

Recently, capacitive deionization (CDI) has been used as a water treatment technology due to simple and low operating potential. In membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI), an ion exchange membrane (IEMS) are placed between each electrode and spacer. The ion exchange membranes play a vital role in improving the deionization efficiency of the cells. In this study, pores of polyethylene (PE) films were filled with tetrabutylammonium 4-vinylbenzene sulfonate (TVS), a cross-linking agent, and a radical initiator, followed by radical polymerization and subsequent replacement of tetrabutylammonium ions with protons. MCDI cells were fabricated using the membranes, and their performances were studied. FT-IR spectroscopy and FE-SEM experiments were performed to see changes in the chemical structures and film morphology. The water uptake, ion exchange capacity and electrical resistance (E.R) of the membranes were measured using various techniques. experimental data will be presented in detail. |
