Salinity gradient power (SGP) is a blue energy available from the concentration difference between saline water and freshwater. There are three mainstream methods: reverse electrodialysis (RED), pressure retarded osmosis, and capacitive mixing. Of these, RED is an attractive electrochemistry-based technique for generating SGP using ion transport through ion exchange membrane. In convensional RED stack, spacer is used for flow path of water sources supplied, but causes some problems, increasing pressure loss and membrane fouling. Therefore, spacer-free membrane fabrication technique is very important to achieve optimum stack design and performance improvement. Herein, we investigate a patterned-ion exchange membrane as a substitute of the space/ membrane combination system and then devise a stack design suitible for it. |
