Fabrication of Pt catalysts supported on hollow titanium nitride for methanol electro oxidation |

Developing energy systems having eco-friendly power generation and high energy conversion such as a DMFC is always an important issue. However, it is well known that Pt catalysts are prone to poisoned easily by CO generated during methanol oxidation in the DMFC’s anode electrode. In this study, we report our effort to replace the carbon support to TiN one which has not only excellent electrical conductivity but also great stability in electrochemical reaction condition. We synthesized Hollow TiN nanoparticles by sol-gel synthesis followed by sequential base etching, thermal treatment under ammonia atmosphere. Variation of the annealing temperature allowed the crystalline of the TiN to be controlled. Platinum nanoparticles were deposited on the prepared TiN supports through surfactant-stabilized method. We conducted the electrooxidation reaction using the prepared Pt/TiN catalysts, and confirmed that they have excellent electrochemical performances in methanol electrooxidation. |
