The selective production of enantiopure compounds is a subject of great industrial significance in the pharmaceutical sectors. Heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis is an attractive method to conveniently produce pure enantiomers. Here, we adopted mesocellular silica foams (MCFs) functionalized by primary, secondary, and tertiary amines and used them as supports for Pt catalysts. Compared to Pt/MCF, the Pt/amine-functionalized MCFs showed enhanced activity and enantioselectivity in enantioselective hydrogenation of methyl pyruvate due to electron-deficient Pt species formed by strong interactions between Pt nanoparticles and amine groups. Particularly, 0.5 wt% Pt/NH2-MCF exhibited superior performance compared to 5 wt% Pt/Al2O3 despite a 10 times lower Pt loading. Moreover, the Pt/NH2-MCF exhibited excellent reusability by showing 100% conversion and 96% enantiomeric excess for 9 successive cycles at 0.1 MPa H2 pressure. |
