제목 Independent control of particle size and pore size of polymeric microspheres by inducing osmosis for pulmonary drug delivery
초록 The aim of this study is to independently control the particle size and pore size of polymeric microspheres, and to test feasibility of the microspheres as a potential pulmonary drug delivery carrier. We hypothesized that bovine serum albumin (BSA) could be used as an osmotic agent and control the porous structure of poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres. BSA was useful to induce osmosis between internal and external water phases during the double emulsion process, resulting in the fabrication of microspheres with controllable, uniform porous structures. Various characteristics of porous PLGA microspheres, including particle size, porous structure, in vivo lung retention efficiency, and release behavior of model proteins in vitro were investigated. This finding to controlling porous structures of polymer microspheres could be useful to develop novel pulmonary drug delivery systems.
