Wind and other usual environmental damages are not hazardous to most organisms since the organism surface is usually designed to maintain a barrier to protect the internal environment of an organism from external forces. However, extreme environmental forces like vacuum space can cause these natural barriers to be insufficient. We propose a method to imitate insect cuticle chemistry and apply it to form insect cuticle mimetic armor for all materials to withstand extreme environments. The Key components of the coating was pyrogallol, a polyphenol derivative, and polyethylenimine. These two materials mimic formation of insect cuticle by oxidation of pyrogallol in presence of air to form quinone groups, which react readily with the amines of PEI, forming a PG/PEI film only at the oxygen interface. This material was used to coat soft samples for vacuum experiment preparation such as SEM sample preparation due to quick formation of insect cuticle mimetic film on the surface of the sample. |
