The use of molecular iodine I2 in controlled radical polymerization, called reverse iodine transfer polymerization, represents a new, straightforward way to prepare controlled tailored architectures. The polymerization of styrene was initiated by potassium persulfate with 1-hexadecanesulfonate as surfactant under argon atmospheres. Stable and uncolored polystyrene latexes were obtained by reverse iodine transfer polymerization at 85℃ for 7hr in emulsion polymerization. The strong reactivity of molecular iodine was used to control the molecular weight of polystyrene, using RITP method. In most experiments, the monomer conversion increases up to 90 percents. |
