Decomposition Kinetic Studies of Polyglycolic acid (PGA) by Thermogravimetric Analysis |

In recent years, research in biodegradable polymers has received a great attention due to their wide range of applications in drug delivery and environmental. Poly (glycolic acid) is the simplest biodegradable polymer. PGA is less studied than poly(lactic acid) (PLA) mainly because glycolic acid is more expensive than lactic acid and PGA and difficult to characterize due to its poor solubility. Currently available high molecular weight PGA in market is synthesized by ring opening polymerization of glycolide (a cyclic diester). In present studies, PGA was successfully synthesized by solution polymerization of glycolic acid and kinetic analysis is performed in comparison with commercially available PGA, by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA here after). TGA was performed with a heating rate from 5 to 50oC. The resultant data was analyzed in terms of activation energy, reaction order generating predictive curves and details are expressed in present study. |
