Multi-microgrid (MMG) incorporating the energy trading between microgrids (MGs) can alleviate the demand-supply mismatch problems in the operation of a single MG occurred by the uncertainty on renewable energy generation. Our previous study proposed a two-stage stochastic decision-making approach to best achieve a tradeoff between the design and operation of MMG under uncertainty. The first stage determines design-level decisions: site selection of constituent MGs among several candidate spots and installation of electric cables between the MGs. After the optimal topology of the MMG is determined, the second stage optimizes the operation-level decisions: energy dispatches in each individual MG and between the MGs. In this study, we developed the framework to apply to the multi-period operation. Assuming a MMG has been constructed and operating, the improved methodology determines the updated optimal topology of the MMG. It enables the decision-making on the site selection of new MGs and connection of additional electric cables in the existing MMG. As a result, the multi-period framework provides a better performance for managing MMGs than the one developed in the previous study. |
