One-Dimensional Exchange NMR Studies on Semicrystalline Polyethylenes |

It is well known that incorporation of a small amount of short-chain branches has a dramatic effect on the mechanical properties of polyethylene. Although extensive research work has been carried out to study the structural changes caused by the short branches in the lamellar crystalline region, most studies have neglected the influence of the noncrystalline region. In this study, we used a solid-state NMR technique to monitor the chain diffusion between the amorphous and crystalline regions. Two samples, linear polyethylene and ethylene-1-hexene copolymer, were investigated by one-dimensional exchange 13C NMR experiments under high-resolution magic-angle-spinning as a function of temperature. The results give indications of the differences in the structure and dynamic behavior of the interphases between crystalline and amorphous regions depending on the presence of short-chain branching. |
