Self-Assembly of Tethered Rodlike Polymers on the Surface |

Self-organizing behaviors of several different types of rodlike polymers containing coil tethers in their nanometers-thick films on the substrate surfaces are presented. The self-assembly of the polymers confined in such nano films is governed by the interplay of the amphiphilic property of the polymers, the reactivity or surface-affinity of constituting blocks or end groups to substrate surfaces, and the liquid crystalline ordering tendency of the rodlike chains. A particular attention will be paid to the surface-induced nematic ordering of the rods in the interfacial monolayer in all polymer systems investigated and its implication in potential application of the rodlike polymers for organic based devices will be discussed. |
