Spatio-orientationally Organized Polymer Structures Obtained on pattern-forming States of Liquid Crystals: Mprphology, Phase Separation, and Potential Applications |
초록 |
We present a variety of spatio-orientationally organized polymer structures templated on pattern-forming states of LCs. This clearly demonstrates the feasibility and flexibility of templating both orientational and positional order of host LCs into polymer network. Since we believe that learning how to create macroscopic organization of functional materials, and the elucidation of rules mediating their patterned phase separation, will offer a fascinating prospect for future research, we investigated possible driving forces behind this templating effect. The Patterned phase separation derives from the concept of director gradient templating, whereby monomer’s/polymer’s spatial phase separation is driven by a competition between reduction in elastic energy and electromagnetic potential energy when monomer or polymer aggregate replaces liquid crystal in more (or less) distorted regions of the molecular director, and a consequent decrease in the entropy of mixing of the two species. |
