제목 Highly enhanced photocatalytic properties of domain-engineered ferroelectric BiFeO3 thin film photoanodes
초록 In photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, charge separation and collection by the electric field is the one of the most important factors to improve the conversion efficiency. Hence, ferroelectric oxides are considered as promising photoanode materials in the way that high built-in-potential due to the spontaneous polarizations can largely enhance the separation and drift of photo-generated carriers. Here, we investigate PEC properties of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) thin film photoanodes with different crystallographic orientations and consequent ferroelectric domain structures. As the crystallographic orientation changes from (001)pc via (110)pc to (111)pc, ferroelastic domains in epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films become mono-variant and the spontaneous polarization increases up 110 μC/cm2. As a result, the photocurrent density at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl increases by approximately 5.3 times and the onset potential decreases by 0.180 V in the downward polarization states. We further demonstrate that ferroelectric switching in the (111)pc BiFeO3 thin film photoanode leads to approximately 8,000% change in the photocurrent density and 0.330 V shift in the onset potential. Our study strongly suggests that domain-engineered ferroelectric material can be used as an effective charge separation and collection layer for efficient solar water splitting photoanodes.
