제목 Characteristics of zinc-containing nanoparticles prepared via laser ablation in liquid and application for biomedical polymer nanosheets
초록 Polymer nanosheets for biomedical application are free-standing ultra-thin films fabricated from a series of polymers such as, e.g., biodegradable poly L-lactic acid (PLLA). Recently, PLLA nanosheets were shown to possess a number features that make them attractive as potential wound dressing: (1) attractive mechanical properties; (2) high adhesiveness and flexibility on any surface; (3) biodegradability and biocompatibility; (4) high transparency for light, air and water; and so on [1]. They were demonstrated to be well adhered on wound/incision areas of any shape and act as an alternative method to conventional suturing/ligation technique. More interestingly, such nanosheets may become more attractive if they are incorporated with nanomaterials that carry drugs or microelements beneficial toward faster wound healing, for instance, nanocontainers with zinc, copper, iron ions, antibiotics and so on.
Zinc is one of microelements known for its compelling functions in biomedicine. Its deficiency is known to cause delayed epithelization and it is also essential for cellular proliferation. Its oxide is known for its anti-bacterial properties, which is also believed to be helpful for wound healing when nanocontainers with Zn ions are incorporated as components of wound dressing. Using biodegradable polymer nanosheets as wound dressing has recently shown to open an avenue toward faster and more efficient healing, and therefore, doping polymer nanosheets with nanoparticles/nano-containers that would release the zinc ions at proper concentration is seen as a next step in preparing new-generation wound dressings with improved properties.
In this study, laser ablation in liquid, which is an environmentally friendly and simple top-down approach to produce nanoparticles with difference sizes, chemistry and morphology, was applied to prepare Zn-containing nanoparticles, which were then incorporated into PLLA nanosheets. The synthesized Zn-containing nanoparticles and nanosheets were characterized, and their ability to release Zn ions upon immersion into aqueous medium with pH 7.4 was evaluated.
