Enhancing latent heat of phase change composites prepared from silica gel and n-octadecane by modifying silica surface |

N-octadecane and its composites with a porous support are currently an attractive material for heat storage. It possesses high latent heat and suitable melting point for building applications. In porous network of the support material, the existent of a non-freezable layer at pore wall lowers the latent heat of the composites. Therefore organic modification of the silica surface is expected to decrease the negative effect of non-freezable layer. In this work, the silica surface was modified with chlorotrimethylsilane. The FT-IR and N2 ads/des isotherm confirmed the successful surface modification. DSC and TGA were used to check the latent heat and n-octadecane content of the composites. The composite prepared from the modified silica exhibited 8.2% higher heat capacity than that of the composite prepared from unmodified silica at the same n-octadecane level. Further investigations are being performed to clear out the effects of surface modification on latent heat of composites. |
