Topological polymers-4-arm star, 8-shaped and tricyclic polystyrenes (PS)-were prepared by atomic transfer radical polymerization and click chemistry. They have different architecture but the same molar mass. As-synthesized multicyclic products synthesized from a 4-arm star PS-azide precursor and different alkyne linkers contain a number of byproducts as impurities. Although hydrodynamic sizes of the products with the same molar mass were somewhat different depending upon their shape, but the difference was not large enough to be fully resolved by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). On the contrary, normal phase temperature gradient interaction chromatography (NP-TGIC) can separate them due to dissimilar interactions of different topological polymers with the stationary phase. Pure products were fractionated by interaction chromatography and byproducts were identified by MALDI-TOF MS analysis. Two-dimensional LC mapping of the products was obtained by coupling NPLC separation to SEC. |
