A magnetorheological (MR) fluid is a type of smart fluid soft magnetic particles dispersed in a carrier fluid with a strong solid-like behavior in the presence of magnetic fields, with an immense interest from academic and industrial communities to design a wide range of engineering applications such as shock absorbers, brakes, active dampers, and so on. We investigated carbonyl iron (CI) based MR fluids suspended in grease and kerosene mixture to tune its off field viscosity for industrial applications. Among various contents of kerosene with fixed CI particles, a mixture of kerosene and grease at a weight ratio of 1:1 was fabricated by a rigorous mechanical stirring method at room temperature. To confirm the shear-thinning phenomenon of pure grease, shear viscosity of the pure grease was observed by a rotational rheometer with increasing shear rate. Various MR properties of CI dispersed grease and kerosene mixture were measured under an applied magnetic field strength. |
