We have been developing new initiators for the living anionic polymerization of isocyanate monomers. So far we have successfully demonstrated the polymerization of n-hexyl isocyanate (HIC) using sodium naphthalenide (Na-Naph), sodium diphenylmethane (Na-DPM), and sodium benzanilide (Na-BA). In this study, to find that sodium deoxybenzoin (Na-DB) is a new and effective initiator for the polymerization of HIC since it serves the dual function of controlled fast initiation and efficient protection of the living chain-ends like Na-BA. The initiator is endowed with additive function, so that use of an external additive is eliminated. It has resulted in polymers with high yields and an effective control over the MW and MWD. To examine the living nature, we carried out block copolymerization between HIC and another isocyanate monomer TESPI using Na-DB as the initiator. The copolymer PHIC-b-PTESPI was produced nearly quantitatively with narrow MWD. |
