Upconversion luminescence properties of Er3+/ Yb3+ in transparent α-Sialon ceramics |

Transparent Er-α-Sialon and (Er, Yb)-α-Sialon ceramics were fabricated by hot pressed sintering method. As a result, Er-α-Sialon ceramics showed better transparency as well as upconversion luminescence. Due to the smaller cationic size of Yb3+ than that of Er3+, the α-Sialon formed with Yb2O3 addition was Yb3+ stabilized α-Sialon. The Yb3+ ions in α-Sialon grains did not play any positive role in upconversion process. Thus upconversion luminescence was lower than that of only Er3+ stabilized α-Sialon ceramics. The transparency was higher in Er3+ stabilized Sialon, more than 60% in visible light region, than that of Yb3+ stabilized Sialon ceramics. The mechanical properties were also investigated in this study. |
