This present study comprises a new anodic oxidation method with electrochemical surface treatment on activated carbon (AC) to introduce surface functional groups, such as -COOH and -OH, for the influence of adsorption behaviors and to investigate the surface nature of pore structure. It was subjected to electrolytic reaction in an aqueous solution of 35wt.% NaOH whereby negative ions were attracted to the surface of the AC acting as an anode, thereby modifying the AC surfaces. As a result, it was observed that the improvement of an acid-base character with electrochemical surface treatment on ACs. In a way expected from the nature of the electrolyte used during this method, even though the physical surface structures of the ACs, such as specific surface area and porosity, were not significantly changed.
