The Prunus yedoensis (Jeju native cherry flower) was used to produce activated carbon and its subsequent use in supercapacitor, and sodium ion battery (NIB) energy storage applications is studied. The synergistic effect of self-doped nitrogen and very large specific surface area promotes the conductivity, enhances carbon interlayer spacing, increases nanovoid volumes and defect density and hence is ideal for the energy storage application. Owing to the prior mentioned features, the EDLC type supercapacitor fabricated from the cherry flower waste derived activated carbon shows remarkable specific capacitance of 334 F g-1 at 0.5 mA g-1 current density. Likewise, commendable results were obtained for NIB. Along with the electrochemical characterizations, in depth kinetic study was performed for both supercapacitor and NIB and excellent charge storage kinetics data were obtained. Hence, the cost effective, ecofriendly, and industrially sustainable energy storage material is proposed. |
