Since the conventional fluorine-based electro-active polymers release toxic residues into the environment during their synthesis and decomposition processes, environmentally friendly piezoelectric polymers are urgently demanded in the field of energy-related soft materials. In this work, we derive a high-performance biodegradable chitin polymer from squid pen material and demonstrate its utility as a flexible piezoelectric material. The ferroelectric phase of β crystalline chitin film with a well-controlled chain orientation confers excellent piezoelectricity under external mechanical pressure. Owing to the flexible nature of chitin material, we can realize a paper-type chitin speaker without significantly deteriorating the input and output sounds. Furthermore, the biodegradable chitin polymer can be dissolved by chitinase enzyme without remaining any toxic residue. |
