Synthesis and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Polymers from Poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEAA) with Quaternary Ammonium Salts |

An antibacterial polymer containing antibacterial agents has been developed. The modified polymer is prepared from poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEAA) and quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) via Steglich esterification. The antibacterial quaternary ammonium salts was synthesized by quaternarization of dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) with 1-chlorododecane. It showed that the highest conversion yield of esterification was achieved depending on synthesis temperature and reaction time. Antibacterial activity was tested against gram-positive bacteria Staphyloccus aureus and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli of those synthesized materials. The results showed that all the QAS-modified polymer demonstrated a significant antibacterial activity depending on synthesis temperature. These observations suggest that synthesized polymers using QASs may be effective for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms by their hydrophobic chains bonded to PEAA polymers. |
