제목 Structure and Transport in Polymer Electrolyte Membranes for Fuel Cell Application
초록 Ion-containing polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) have attracted considerable attention for their potential use in batteries and fuel cells. Fuel cells are of particular interest due to their ability to produce power without degrading the environment. Block copolymer based PEMs are ideally suited for fundamental studies due to the fact that the size and shape of the ion conducting channels are defined by the molecular structure of the copolymer and the water content. We establish a new systematic methodology for controlling the water retention of PEMs. We show that PEMs with well-defined hydrophilic channels in the 2 to 5 nm range remain moist up to 90oC, which leads to an increase in the overall conductivity with increasing temperature. Simple calculations suggest that capillary condensation is important at these length scales. The morphology of the hydrated membranes is determined by a combination of in-situ neutron scattering and cryogenic electron microscopy.
