To improve the toughness of epoxy resin in order to serve as an advanced material for aerospace component applications, Carboxyl functionalized amine terminated polyeherimide(COOH-ATPEI) as a functionalized thermoplastic was introduced. In this study, the cure kinetics of an epoxy system containing the 4,4'-tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenyl methane(TGDDM) and diaminodiphenyl sulfone(DDS) as a curing agent, and their blends with COOH-ATPEI at neat, 5, 10 and 15wt% were studied. The cure kinetics were studied using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) under isothermal conditions at 160, 175 and 190℃ to determine the reaction parameters and dynamic conditions(-50∼350℃) were followed after isothermal analysis. By increasing the amount of COOH-ATPEI in the blends at contant temperature, the final cure conversion was decreased. But, increasing temperature at the same amount of COOH-ATPEI in the blends, it was increased. A diffusion controlled reaction was observed as the cure conversion increased and the rate equation was analyzed by incorporating the diffusion control term in the autocatalytic model for the epoxy/DDS/COOH-ATPEI blends. |
