Living Anionic Polymerization of Oligo(ethylene glycol) Methacrylates |

Anionic polymerization of methyl, ethyl, and vinyl ethers of oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylates was carried out with diphenylmethyllithium or diphenylmethylpotassium in THF at 78 °C. The resulting polymers possessed the predicted molecular weights based on the molar ratios between monomer and initiator and the narrow molecular weight distribution. Methyl and ethyl ethers of di(ethylene glycol), tri(ethylene glycol), and tetra(ethylene glycol) esters showed water solubility, and the aqueous solutions became cloudy by increasing the temperature. The cloud points increased with the side chain length. On the other hand, the corresponding vinyl ethers were insoluble in water, indicating the hydrophobic property of vinyl terminal group in the side chain. Amphiphilic block copolymers of styrene and oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylates were synthesized by the sequential copolymerizations. |
