High Solid and High Stability of Waterborne Polyurethane |

Waterborne polyurethanes have been designed based on the different positions and concentrations of ionic group. It was found that dispersions containing ionic groups at the chain termini (called terminal ions) gave the smallest dispersion size, highest dispersion stability and viscosity, whereas hard ions containing ionic groups in hard segments gave the greatest water swelling and lowest dispersion stability. It was demonstrated that highly stable dispersions of high solid content can be obtained at low ionic content by simply incorporating the ionic groups at flexible chain ends. The results were interpreted in terms of high mobility and low free energy of chain ends. It was possible to obtain stable dispersions of high solid content (50%) at very low ionic content (1%) by the proper molecular design of the waterborne polyurethanes. |
