Synthesis and physicochemical properties of acetylated glycol chitosan |

Glycol chitosan (GC) is a water soluble chitosan derivative being proposed as a new material for pharmaceutical and bioengineering applications. With the goal of extending the application of GC for use in drug delivery system, GC was selectively N-acetylated using acetic anhydride in mild conditions. Acetylated glycol chitosan (AC-GC) was verified by both 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy and their physicochemical properties were characterized in terms of solubility, biodegradability, self-assembling and sol-gel transition properties. The degree of N-acetylation (DA) was modulated approximately from 10% to 88% by varying the feed molar ratio of acetic anhydride to GC. Biodegradability of GC was further improved by the N-acetylation, AC-GC with higher DA leading to faster biodegradation. These biocompatible and degradable AC-GCs could be a new promising material for drug delivery system and biomedical applications. |
