Group Transfer Polymerization of Methyl Mthacrylate Mediated by Organocatalyst |

Organocatalyst-mediated group transfer polymerization (GTP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out using 1-methoxy-1-trimethylsilyloxy-2-methyl-propene (MTS) as the initiator. Phosphazene base (t-Bu-P4) and trifluoromethanesulfonimide (HNTf2) were used as base and acid organocatalysts, respectively. The controlled polymerization was realized for the t-Bu-P4-mediated GTP of MMA in the presence of MTS, and chain extension experiment resulted in an increase of the molecular weight without broadening the molecular weight distribution. These results suggested that t-Bu-P4-mediated GTP proceeded through a living manner. In addition, the HNTf2-mediated GTP of MMA in the presence of MTS also proceeded through a living manner to afford MMAs with predicted molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Furthermore, the stereoregularity of an MMA obtained at -55 ºC was high syndiotactic as mm/rm/rr = 0/10/90. |
