Desalination and nuclide separation of commercial nanofiltration membrane are investigated under room temperature to elucidate the permeation mechanism and possibility on applying treatment of wastewater from nuclear facility. Polyamide based commercial membranes are prepared to investigate their nanofiltration performance on model seawater and single-component nuclide aqueous solution. Polymeric membranes show decent performance (flux: 150~210 LMH and rejection: 40~80%) on the permeation of model seawater. On the other hand, they have flux around 200 LMH for single component nuclides (Cs, Sr, and Co) with rejection of 54~83%. Further characterization reveals that polymeric nanofiltration membranes show much better performance for nuclide separation than desalination, especially in dilute stream. This study indicates that nanofiltration membranes can be potential candidate for nuclide separation even if they are not fully rejecting salt in sea water. Future work using radioactive nuclides is warranted. |
