Two-photon absorbing (TPA) materials have been extensively studied for various applications such as bio-imaging, photodynamic therapy, 3-D microfabrication, optical power limiting, and data storage. In order to utilize TPA materials especially for bio-imaging, there is a need for fluorescent labels with a large two-photon cross-section and high quantum efficiency to enable detection and enhance sensitivity. In this work, we have designed and prepared TPA chromophores based on donor--donor systems miscible in biological environments. We were able to visualize the cell membrane well, but chromophores showed a fast quenching in fluorescence. These materials were encapsulated by poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) for prevent quenching. They are expected to show good optical properties which are currently being study. |
