One of the biggest concern with ABS which is one of the most widely used thermoplastics is the effects of UV rays. ABS is degraded by UV rays when exposed to outdoor conditions due to microcrack formation. These microcrack cause chemical and mechanical problems. To improve UVC radiation resistance, ABS was compounded with light and UV stabilizer. ABS and ABS contained UV additives were exposed to UVC for 10, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 240 hours. They were characterized using mechanical properties analysis, color measurement and SEM. In this investigation, the results indicated that UV additives show a similar retention of mechanical properties. And the scanning electron microscopy proved that there was no difference between the UVC unexposed blend and the UVC exposed blend because UVC has no significant influence on the surface of ABS due to the short wavelength. Nevertheless, the delta E of ABS contained UV additives is lower than that of ABS with increasing UVC exposure time. |
