Ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3) has been widely used to remove the nitrogen oxides (NOx) from combustion of fossil fuels at high temperature. Conventionally, ammonium carbonate has been produced by the absorption of carbon dioxide with ammonia aqueous solution. However, this method have several drawbacks such as toxicity of ammonia, corrosion of reactor and producing insoluble ammonium bicarbonate as byproduct. Herein, we developed the efficient and environmental method for producing of ammonium carbonate-urea solution by catalytic hydrolysis of urea. The optimized composition of reaction mixtures such as ammonium carbonate : urea was obtained as 4 : 1 using potassium carbonate as a catalyst. |
