Magnetic Energy Harvesting by Magnetoelectric Composites |

With the recent surge in the usage of various low-power consumption devices, such as MEMS based sensors, health monitoring devices, wireless communication components, and personal electric device, there is a tremendous need for longer lasting efficient power sources that can recharge or replace small batteries with finite life span. Energy harvesting implies the capture and use of wasted environmental energy to generate electricity. Though parasitic magnetic noise considered as harmful for human body, but it can be a ubiquitous energy source as we are surrounded with 50/60 Hz magnetic noise arising from power delivery infrastructure but cannot be readily utilized by traditional electromagnetic harvesters. Here we introduce novel Magneto-Mechano-Electric (MME) generator with high energy output can turn on more than 60 high intensity commercial LEDs under weak magnetic field of 5 G at 60 Hz. The MME generators are cantilever structured magnetoelectric (ME) laminates composed of <011> oriented anisotropic single crystal fiber composite (SFC) bonded on Ni plate and Nd permanent magnet proof mass. This MME generator can be ubiquitous power source for wireless sensor networks, low power electric devices, and wireless charging system by harvesting tiny parasitic magnetic energy from our living environment. |
