CHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF C60 BY DESTRUCTIVE ELECTROPHILIC SUBSTITUTION REACTION IN POLYPHOSPHORIC ACID/PHOSPHORUS PENTOXIDE |

Adducts of electrophilic substitution reaction of electron deficient C60 with 4-fluorobenzoyl chloride (4-FBCl) were afforded via Friedel-Crafts acylation in the reaction medium, PPA/P2O5. The reaction condition that we have developed and applied to the carbon nanomaterials such as single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT), multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT), and vapor-grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF) was strong enough to facilitate destructive functionalization of C60. To our knowledge, we have demonstrated for the first time that Friedel-Crafts acylation in polyphosphoric acid is a viable, alternative route to effecting controlled functionalization of C60. Our preliminary results also indicated the feasibility of grafting a 4-FBCl onto C60. It is envisioned that the presence of versatile carbonyl functions on the C60 will allow further development of application-specific derivatization chemistry to generate interesting C60-based materials. |
