A Nafion membrane which have both high proton conductivity and chemical stability, is generally used for a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). But high cost and low ion selectivity of the Nafion membrane, are still limitations. In this presentation, we propose a fabrication method of the ultra-thin Nafion membrane on the air/water interface using very small amount of Nafion solution. In order to apply to VRFB system, the ultra-thin Nafion membrane was introduced on the surface of the supporting membrane by Langmuir-Blodgett method. The deposition steps were repeatedly conducted to make multilayer composite membrane. The vanadium ion permeability and cell tests of composite membrane were investigated according to layers numbers. Because of the dense and highly aligned polymer structure of the Nafion membrane, the cell performance was improved. From these results, we suggest that this new method has potential in the VRFB application. |
