While green bioplastic based on carbohydrate polymers have showed considerable promise, most natural biopolymer films possess weak mechanical and poor gas barrier properties, limiting their applicability. We developed various bioplastic films through a simple process, based on nanocelluloses such as cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TEMPO-CNFs). The resultant bioplastic films exhibit a good transmittance, excellent thermal stability, superior strength, and good water resistance. Furthermore, celluloses-based nanocomposite films were successfully applied for constructing a transparent electric circuit as well as high performance plasmonic sensor devices. Our studies will pave the way to developing practical bioplastics with simple, environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes for various applications. |
