In a proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer, Nafion is conventionally used as a solid electrolyte. Although the Nafion has excellent proton conductivity and mechanical properties, poor gas barrier property is fatal to membrane lifetime and safe operation. In our study, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayer was investigated as gas barrier layer without significant impediment of proton transport. The hBN/Nafion composite membrane was prepared by hot pressing and wet etching process. The obtained membranes were analyzed by using XPS, AFM and SEM to confirm the successful transfer, and mechanical property was analyzed by micro material tester. Additionally, impedance and gas chromatography analysis were carried out to measure proton conductivity and hydrogen permeability of the composite membrane. Finally, performances of water electrolyzer containing the composite membrane were analyzed. |
