pH-dependent release from monoolein cubic phase containing acidic polypeptides |

Monoolein (MO) in water forms a lamellar structure, an inverted hexagonal phase, or a bicontinuous inverted cubic phase. Since the cubic phases are biocompatible and biodegradable, they could be used as drug delivery vehicles. In this study, cubic phases containing acidic polypeptide were prepared by hydrating MO using the polymer solution. The cubic phase was pH-sensitive in terms of release. The polypeptide in the water channels of cubic phases will take a contracted form or an extended from, depending the pH of medium. As a result, diffusion through the water channels would be varied in a pH-dependent manner. This may account for the pH-dependent release. |
