Preparation of Mg substituted β-TCP/HA Composites and Their Sintering Behaviors |

Magnesium is contained in human bone tissue by approximately 0.5 to 1wt% and induces densification of β-TCP by inhibiting β-to-α phase transformation. Mg substituted β-TCP and HA powders used in the present study were prepared using wet precipitation methods. The samples were mixed by wet ball milling using ethyl alcohol as the solvent to prevent hydration of β-TCP. Mg substituted β-TCP and HA composites with various Mg-TCP to HA ratios are studied for their sintering behaviors on varying the firing temperature from 900 to 1400℃. Characterizations of the composite samples were carried out using an ICP, FT-IR and XRD. Analytical results confirmed that magnesium has been substituted into calcium site of β-TCP and amount of magnesium is in the range of 0.5 to 2wt%. Sintering behavior was investigated via SEM and it is confirmed that fully dense sintered body can be obtained within the thermal stability region. |
