Recently, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely employed to achieve the activation of the catalytic properties of semiconductors. In this study, AuNPs were prepared using HAuCl4 and trisodium citrate dehydrate(TCD). AuNPs of different sizes, namely 18, 20, and 22 nm (AuNPs-18, AuNPs-20, AuNPs-22), were prepared by controlling the TCD concentration and reaction time. Furthermore, ZnO nanorods were prepared using zinc nitrate hexahydrate through a hydrothermal process. Finally, ZnO@AuNPs photocatalysts were prepared by mixing ZnO and AuNPs at room temperature. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized ZnO@AuNPs were evaluated through the degradation of rhodamine B dye under solar light. Interestingly, ZnO@AuNPs-22 showed the highest photocatalytic activity, providing up to 78.6% dye degradation. The higher photocatalytic activity of the ZnO@AuNPs-22 was probably due to the increased surface plasmon resonance effect of the larger AuNPs-22. |
