Self Polishing Properties of Zinc–based Copolymers with Various Acrylic Monomer Contents for Antifouling Paints |

Antifouling paints are used to protect ship and boat hulls from fouling settlements and to improve craft speed by reducing water friction. Since 2003, antifouling paints contained organotin compounds have been banned after demonstrating toxic effects on non-target marine invertebrates. Therefore, tin-free antifouling paints are required in these days. It was found that zinc methacrylate could be leached out into sea water by the ion exchange reaction between zinc in the polymers and sodium in the sea water. In order to investigate influences of resin compositions such as content of zinc methacrylate, hydrophilicity and molecular weight of copolymers, we synthesized the zinc methacrylate copolymers with various monomer compositions. The characterizations of copolymers were done by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and GPC. Leaching rate of self polishing copolymers was determined from the change in thickness of dried films after sea water immersion in a dynamic condition. |
