Coating of graphene with alumina improves performance of its composite with acrylic rubber |

We report a simple approach to coat graphene with an ultra thin alumina layer by first coating it with aluminium-tri-sec-butoxide in anhydrous dimethylformamide, followed by hydrolysis of the alkoxide and calcination in an inert environment. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (elemental mapping) confirm a uniform, ultra thin coated alumina layer on graphene surface. Thermogravimetry demonstrates that the stable coated alumina layer substantially improves thermal stability of the modified graphene. The ultra thin, electrically insulative alumina layer reduces the electrical conductivity of graphene to about 40-folds while preserves its other advantageous properties, makes the modified graphene possible use as filler for fabrication of an electrically insulative acrylic rubber composite. |
