The possibility of using ionic liquids (IL) as inner solvent for ionomeric polymer actuators to prolong air-operating actuation time has been sought. Herein, we present the structural interplay between ionomer and IL affecting electrically-stimulated ion transport and actuation performance of IL-based actuators, in order to design novel ILs and alternative ionomers for high-performance polymer actuators. Series of imidazolium-based ILs were explored as inner solvents exhibiting various structural factors and physicochemical properties. Nafion with different counter cations including lithium, sodium, cesium, 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium, and tetrabutyl ammonium was used as ionomeric matrix. We demonstrated that the ionomeric morphology of IL-soaked Nafion and the anion-cation association of all charged species contributed to the behaviors of charge transport and electromechanical deformation in the IL-soaked actuator. The detailed results will be presented in meeting. |
