Preparation of bimetallic borides with enriched grain boundaries for improved hydrogen evolution reaction |

Grain boundaries can cause strained regions in a catalyst's nanostructure, resulting in highly active surfaces with optimal electronic structures for catalysis. Although studies on grain boundaries for catalysis have been published, constructing nanostructures with rich grain boundaries and revealing their function mechanisms remains a challenge. We report a simple method for making bimetallic borides Ni3B/MoB nanosheets with abundant grain boundaries, as well as the effect of grain boundaries on hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalytic activity (HER). The synthesized Ni3B/MoB has multiple grain boundaries and optimum shape, according to experimental data and theoretical calculations. The electronic states at the grain boundary were also modified, and ΔGH* was optimized. In both acidic and alkaline environments, this resulted in highly intrinsic catalytic activity for HER. This study adds to our understanding of how transition metal borides and functional materials enhanced grain boundaries for catalysis are synthesized and regulated. |
